My first copy of this list ran on and on and on. Nobody wants to be subjected to my poorly written ramblings, so I tried my best to use lists to condense this already lengthy post.
Goals
1. No handmade gifts this year, unless specifically requested. Instead I'll buy handmade or at least shop local.
2/3. "No-New New Year" No new fabric or patterns! I'm cataloging my stash so I remember to use it because I have so much I don't need any more. No new clothes! I filled in most of my RTW wardrobe gaps last year and in some cases I went overboard. If I buy anything it should come from a thrift store, with the exception of things like bras and socks. I stuck the button below on my page to remind myself of this goal.
4. Make things I'll love and wear (whether it is a sweatshirt or a cocktail dress).
5. Take my time. I've rushed too many projects only to have ruined them.
6. And overall, stay organized!
Sew-Alongs
1. This is my own sew-along. You're welcome to join in, steal the button and use the phrase "No-New" however you see fit. I'm using it to mean no new RTW clothes and hopefully no new fabric or patterns. If I do buy a piece of fabric or pattern, I need to get rid of one to make room.

2. The Dreamstress'
Historical Sew Fortnightly! I have several historical garments (75 years
or older for this challenge) on my list (they have an asterisk) this year.
Garments To Sew
1. Obi Belt* - I need a sash to close the 1940s silk robe my boyfriend bought for me and I have a 1970s pattern for an obi sash. Done and done.

2. "Mrs. Patmore" Apron* - I'm planning on making a Mrs. Patmore of Downton Abbey style apron for my friend, Emily, since she does all the cooking and hosting for our Downton watching parties.

3. Cloak* - Because I really want one. That's my whole excuse and preferably it should match my medieval gown.
4. Regency Stays* - I've done the chemise, step two is the stays.
5. Regency Bonnet* - Another project for which I already have all the supplies but just haven't made. It basically involves cutting part of the brim off a straw hat and then adding ribbon ties and decorating it.
6. Medieval Over-Dress* - Yes, it has an actual name, but it is escaping me at the moment. I'd like one, obviously to go over my medieval gown.
7. Katwise Sweater Coat - My inner nerdy slavic girl demands that I make one of these beautiful coats.

8. 1940s Overalls - Since I'll be working as a painter, I thought a pair of these might be cute. Or just for traipsing around the woods or working on my car.
9. Jersey Dresses - I have a small hoard of jersey now and these are two patterns I'm considering because I already have the fabric.
10. McCalls 6446 - I have a beautiful 100% blanket-weight wool and 5 elk antler buttons that are crying out to be made into this. I think. This is my most on the fence pattern. I love it, but will I wear it? Will the wool be to heavy? What do you think?
11. McCall's 6614 -Somewhat unglamorous, but I'd like to have a crack at making a sweatshirt.
12. Victory Patterns' Lola - And why not a sweatshirt dress, too? I got this pattern for Christmas and I love cozy dresses. No fabric in my stash for this one, though.
13. Bags, bags, bags - I really need some re-usable grocery bags. I've also got the fabric to make a canvas satchel from the 1970s. The only bag I've sewn has lasted me well over a year (and I used it every day), so it's definitely worth it.

This list should keep me plenty busy! I don't think I'll get to all of them and probably I'll swap some out, since none of my WIPs made it on. Oops.

I think you should go for it with the cape - what else will you use that fabric for? Sounds cosy and dramatic and if you love it, you'll make excuses to wear it.
ReplyDeleteOh my! That sweater coat is awesome! I hope you make one!
ReplyDeleteThose Katwise coats are spectacular (Loran made a few this year the The Sew Weekly - did you see them?). I'm in the middle of making two 12c. tunics (linen and wool) for my man, so I may join in the historical fortnightly sew along too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog! It's nice to read about your no new-new year! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI love that victory patterns -lola dress! Can't wait to see it materialize!
For #6, the fitted underdress is called a Cotehardie. I believe the part over it is called a Sideless Surcoat.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteWhat a great list of goals! Is the overdress called a kirtle, or is that the belt? Surcoat sounds right.
ReplyDeleteI am with you on the No New New Year! I need to sew through my huge stash and use my lovely patterns! I'm planning on making the Eva Dress trousers, too.
The ones from the overalls pattern? My copy came from Vintage Fashion Library...I'm really excited to make those! Sadly, not enough denim or duck-cloth in my stash though, so I'm going to have to trade something out when I buy it. I'm hoping to start them in maybe March so I can wear them for spring.
DeleteI have been wanting to make a sideless surcoat for the past ten years, the one I have is McCall 3653, which like my other favorite garb (McCall 3663) was discontinued when I was in high school. Maybe I'll do it this year.
ReplyDeleteI also want to make a sweatshirt, based on some adorable things I see on pintrest. The other day I was comparing fabric contents to see if I could feasibly dye some rib knit and sweatshirt material the same color, but I'd probably need to experiment a lot.
I love the apron with the buttons. And, you should totally make those overalls.

Haha! I went to your LiveJournal and was all...Nikki? Ben? Gabi? And then obviously figured out who you were :) We can always have a medieval sewing party and make sideless surcoats together! I'm daunted by the idea of using rib knit. I've got Sew U Home Stretch and she uses it in so many projects, but where does one even find it?! I guess online?
DeleteI found some 100% cotton rib knit that has sewed up BEAUTIFULLY at... Joann's. No joke -their Sew Classic Rib Knit, reg. price $9.99 (yay 40% off coupons!) is really a great product, MUCH different than the rest of that line in terms of quality. It comes in white and black in two different "rib widths" (dunno the technical term, hope you get what I mean) and then in the regular rib width, some colors that are really, uh...well, I buy the white, and use Rit dye and their recipes for colors on their website, and I am so happy with everything I have made with it. It really seems to sew up on a regular machine nearly painlessly, certainly more so than most other knits I've tried, and sewing knits in general scares the skirts off me. Hope this helps!

DeleteThat sweater coat is the most amazing thing I've seen for a long time. Need. One. Oh god..will add to my list...:D
ReplyDeleteYes to all of it, but especially the sweater coat - HOLY CANNOLI. What fabulous resolutions!! Yay for no new fabric or patterns! We can totally support each other through this trying time :)
ReplyDeleteYes! Although I'm thinking a swap is in order...I've sorted out my patterns I'd like to get rid of and now I've started on my fabric as well.
Deletei can tell you simlicity 1804 is awesome. made two of them last year and never blogged it...
ReplyDeleteOh, we've got some similar things on our lists! I'm definitely going for some jersey dresses, since I seem to live in them, and I've got a Lola, too!
ReplyDeleteI've also been thinking about no new patterns and fabrics, since there is *so much* in my stash! Not sure I'm quite ready to commit to that, though... But if you're organizing any kind of swap, drop me a line? :)
Of course I will :)
